Counting Coup is a type of battle tactic formerly used by warriors of various plains tribes American Indians to disgrace their opponent rather than eliminate them, and simultaneously gain military presitige for such act. Unique in its function of permitting said opponent to remain alive, as opposed to striking them down, the nature of this wartime event had the potential to bestow upon the warrior who performed a feat of counting coup greater chances of increasing their rank as a warrior within their tribe's warrior culture. The term counting coup is synonymous with the four deeds : touching an enemy, stealing an enemy's weapon, stealing an enemy's horse, and leading a war party in victory.
